My Approach To Therapy For Partners of People With Sex Addictions

Research shows that being betrayed by your love partner is no different from other traumatic life events and that if not addressed can lead to depression, anxiety, and other symptoms of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder.

I provide supportive and understanding therapy for partners of sex addicts who often feel betrayed and need to learn to understand sex addiction, how it affects their relationship, and how to overcome the emotional challenges it creates.

Hi, I’m Dr. Asher Lipner.

I work with people who have a partner with a porn or sex addiction. Whether you have just found out about your partner's addiction for the first time or it has been going on for years, I can help.

My experience working with people with sex and porn addictions has taught me that their addictions wreak havoc on their partners and their families. Often, their treatment involves couples therapy to help the addict take accountability for the damage and learn what needs to be done to heal the relationship. This work has shown me that the effect the addiction has on the relationship causes emotional challenges for the partner, who through no fault of their own, often now needs help coping with and overcoming these challenges.

Some of my clients want to learn how to mend their relationship as the partner with the addiction recovers. Others want to figure out how to get out of the relationship and learn how to get over it. Many are unsure about what they want to do and need help to figure out their next steps. What every partner of a sex addict has in common, is that their lives have been negatively affected by the addiction.

Here are just a few of the things my clients experience that I help them within therapy:

- Feelings of shock, pain, anger, and fear.

- Difficulty trusting others

- The effects of long-term gaslighting by their spouse or partner

- Obsessive worry about their partner continuing to cheat on them

- Questioning how they could have believed lie after lie for an extended period of time.

- Self-doubt, self-blame, shame, and loss of self-esteem

- Fears about the possibility of having STDs

- Confusion about their relationship due to their partner’s double life

- Sadness and loss of the relationship they thought they had

- Feeling paralyzed, and out of control

If you are a partner of a sex addict and relate to these experiences, you are not alone. Research shows that being betrayed by your love partner is no different from other traumatic life events that if not addressed, can lead to depression, anxiety, and other symptoms of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder.

I know how difficult and painful it can be to face these issues. So, I use my 20 years of experience as a therapist to provide a quality program of therapy for the partners of people struggling with infidelity, sex, or porn addictions.
